Curriculum

The design of the curriculum aims to provide students with the tools to assess and solve problems, to develop socially and emotionally, and to become global citizens.  The curriculum is based on a conviction that students grow through understanding how they learn as much as they do from the acquisition of specific concepts and knowledge.

Our approach is guided by respect for children’s individual differences, by recognizing their inherent capacity for growth, and by a commitment to plan activities and environments that shape their learning and provide opportunities for success.

TWA is at an exciting stage of its development as we transition to a full British curriculum school.  The aim of our new academic courses is to nurture future leaders through the provision of a rigorous, well-rounded education, based on four key principles.

  • An enhanced British curriculum – the education programme combines a progressive and rigorous academic curriculum with a fulfilling and diverse co-curriculum.  By combining these two elements, students benefit from the opportunities to develop as able, well-rounded young people.  The enhanced British curriculum will ultimately prepare students for IGCSEs and A-Levels.
  • Academic excellence for all – with the encouragement and support of dedicated teachers, students benefit from a personalized approach to teaching and learning that encourage them to reach their highest levels of achievement.
  • Reinforcement of Saudi culture – the school reinforces the Saudi nature of the education on offer by placing importance on Arabic culture, language, arts and Islamic Studies.  The World Academy teaches students the importance of respect, thoughtfulness, considerateness, kindness, generosity and mindfulness.
  • Standards– academic standards are benchmarked against UK Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) framework for inspection.  ISI is the body approved by the UK Government for the purpose of inspecting schools both in England and overseas. 

Primary Curriculum

Younger children follow courses designed to suit their age range and ability, including daily routines, classes, interactions, communications, events and celebrations, underpinned by the UK’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) programme for Kindergarten and Reception years, and also by the UK Curriculum for Grades 1-5.

  • The Arabic curriculum focuses on developing each child’s emerging language skills and on making specific links to the English programme and other areas.  Collaborative planning ensures that the curriculum is integrated as much as possible with the concepts being developed within the EYFS.  The emphasis is to ensure that Arabic is a living language and is integrated as part of regular learning as much as possible.
  • The English curriculum enables children to learn to communicate confidently and effectively and to develop the skills to respond to a range of texts, information and media with understanding and enjoyment. 
  • The Maths curriculum explores the five main content areas – number, geometry, measure, data-handling and problem-solving.  These focus on principles, patterns, systems, functions and relationships so that the children can learn to apply mathematical knowledge and develop a holistic understanding of the subject.
  • The Science curriculum covers four content areas – scientific enquiry, Biology, Chemistry and Physics.  Scientific enquiry focuses on evaluating evidence, recording and analysing data, investigating and planning, and considering new ideas.  Environmental awareness, along with some history of science, also forms a part of the curriculum.

The curriculum is enriched through opportunities in motor-development, music, movement, creativity and suitable technology.  Field trips, multimedia, guest visitors and peer support facilitate the connection beyond the classroom into the real world. 

Secondary Curriculum 2020/21

The Senior School comprises three sections:

  • Prep                            Grades 6 and 7;
  • Secondary                    Grades 8, 9 and 10;
  • Sixth Form                   Grades 11 and 12.

Prep – Grades 6 and 7

Students in the Prep Section follow courses underpinned by the UK Curriculum Key Stage 3 standards.  These lay the foundation for the IGCSE examinations that students sit in the final semester of their Grade 10 year.

In order to ensure a strong platform for the IGCSE curriculum, the core subjects in Grades 6 and 7 mirror those required for IGCSEs:

  • Mathematics
  • Sciences (Physics, Chemistry and Biology)
  • English
  • Arabic
  • Humanities
  • Islamic Studies

Students also benefit from the following subjects during the course of the year:

  • Physical Education
  • Art & Design
  • Design Technology
  • Drama
  • Music

Secondary and Sixth Form (Grades 8 – 12)

Current students moving into Grades 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 will continue to follow the US standards-based curriculum through to their graduation. The curriculum standards adopted at TWA are approved by COGNIA, one of the largest US curriculum accreditation bodies in the world.

To ensure that students benefit from a broad curriculum and complete their studies with the skills and qualifications required for university, the content on offer is divided into ‘core’ and ‘elective’ subjects:

Our small class sizes allow teachers to adopt a highly personalized approach to learning, ensuring students receive the individual attention they need to prepare for university.

Special Educational Needs and EAL

Special Educational Needs (SEN)

Through our personalized approach to learning, we cater for the needs of each student to help them fulfil their unique potential. Our dedicated Learning Support Department is equipped to oversee the requirements of students with Special Educational Needs.

All students requiring learning support are provided with an Individual Education Plan (IEP). The learning support department works with all teachers to ensure the needs of all students with SEN are incorporated into their lesson planning. In addition, our specialist SEN teachers run small group or individual intervention sessions for children who require more focussed support to access the curriculum.  

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

At TWA, our principal language of instruction is English. We do recognise, however, that for many students English is a second or third language. As such, TWA has dedicated and specialist English as an Additional Language support available to help students access the curriculum. Our EAL team not only run individual and small group lesson with students, but also work with other teachers to ensure they are incorporating the needs of EAL students into their lesson planning.

Co-curriculum

“As part of our commitment to developing children as healthy and rounded individuals all students take part in our co-curricular programme of activities.”

Whilst we, of course, understand the importance of students making significant academic progress at school, we hold a firm belief that learning is not the exclusive domain of the classroom. TWA ensures that every child is given opportunities to discover interests and talents beyond the classroom, be it through Sport, Music, the Arts, Technology or Language and Communication.  Our co-curricular programme helps students to build character, teamwork skills and self-confidence, equipping them for bright and successful futures.

All our teachers participate fully in the co-curricular programme, allowing them to truly understand what makes each student tick. Seeing students across multiple environments allows teachers to recognize children as individuals and to develop the means to unlock the potential in each child.
